I’ve been having a lot of fun with a CNC (Computer Numeric Control) router that can cut aluminum. I wanted to connect it to my free & open source ecosystem, so I made sure to get one based on free & open source firmware that handles standard gcode input. I found these features in the Genmitsu PROVerXL 4030. It’s not easy, but it is rewarding. I have progressed in my learning to a point of being able to machine two pieces of aluminum that screw together smoothly. You can see the single-pole threadmill in the above video cutting one thread at a time on a circular ring of aluminum that is being cut out of an aluminum block. An air compressor is blowing away aluminum debris and applying a clean manufacturing technique called MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication). The entire process runs on electricity, recyclable aluminum, and biodegradable lubricant.
